Supporters Of NYC Paid Sick Leave Bill Rally At City Hall
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — There were chants of victory Friday as lawmakers, union members and labor advocates celebrated what they say is a win for workers across New York City with a new bill that guarantees paid sick leave for employees.
City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and fellow lawmakers stood on the steps of City Hall to officially announce the agreement, which was reached Thursday night.
“It protects people, protects small businesses and I’m incredibly proud with this final piece of legislation,” she said.
City Council adopts sick leave policy
Starting next year, workers inside Portland city limits can’t be fired for taking a day off with the flu or staying home with a sick child, and most will get at least a week's paid sick leave.
On Wednesday, Portland City Council unanimously approved a new sick-leave mandate for employers doing business in the city.
Future Of Paid Sick Leave Bill Now In Mayor’s Hands
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The ball is now in Mayor Nutter’s court on a paid sick leave bill passed yesterday in Philadelphia City Council (see related story), just before the relocation of his budget address in that raucous session.
Two years ago, the vote was 9-8, and the Mayor vetoed a similar bill. There are new faces on Council, and the sponsor of the measure, Councilman Bill Greenlee, wanted those new members to get up to speed on the importance of getting a veto-proof margin.
“Frankly, I held this bill up out of respect for the six new members, because there was alot going on last year. I wanted to get the information out.”
