The Case for Earned Sick Time
As business owners, women want to offer good benefits, but they are often at an unfair disadvantage without a minimum standard in place. When they do decide to offer fair wages and benefits, they run the risk of being undercut by the competition. The U.S. Women’s Chamber of Commerce strongly and enthusiastically endorses the earned sick time legislation because it supports small businesses, benefits workers and encourages an equitable workplace for women across the Commonwealth.

Mass. Needs Sick Leave Mandate
For the nearly 1 million Massachusetts workers and their families, proper health care is largely out of reach. That's because they don't have basic, paid sick days - and it means higher costs for them, their employers and our communities.

Flu season adds weight to call for paid sick leave

By Ed McManus of Harwich / Cape Cod Times / November 28, 2011

I was encouraged to read about efforts to require paid sick days be provided to all Massachusetts workers. Sen. Dan Wolf should be roundly applauded for supporting this bill. This is a step that is critical to ensure health of working people, children and families of working people and the health of the public.

As we enter the flu season it appalls me that our Cape chamber officials would oppose these safeguards. One only needs to look at the tag team rounds of flu and pneumonia that are going around at our public schools to see the needs.

Parents who can't afford to pay for care and can't afford to take a day off have no other option but to send their under-the-weather kids to school, where they infect and get reinfected by the same illness. Friends are having their children sick for the second time in as many weeks. I guess some have never experienced the horrible decisions that being a parent and being poor force on you.

We all should get behind this effort to do the right thing for our Cape working people, their children and all of our public health.
